Jordan Mixed Open, Jordan, Staysure Tour.

Jordan Mixed Open, Ayla, Jordan April 4-6, 2019 Staysure Tour.

The Jordan Mixed Open was a world first, bringing three different tours together playing off three sets of tees for three days. The field consisted of 40 players from the Challenge Tour, 40 players from the Ladies European Tour and 40 players from the Staysure Tour. The Challenge Tour players teeing off the back tees, the Staysure Tour players off the middle tees and the Ladies European Tour off the front tees.

The tournament was a huge success and great fun for us senior players to play with the young promising long hitting Challenge Tour players and the very impressive girls on the Ladies European Tour. The field would be cut to the leading 60 players after two rounds and I fell for this cut. Shooting 73-73 for two over par, was two shots too many to get in to the final round.

It was my first real test after playing in the Seychelles in the middle of December and it wasn’t easy to get comfortable on the course. I got off to a bad start in the first round being 3 over par after five holes, largely because of bad putting. It was in the cards that I would be fighting to make the cut from the very first holes. I fought through the first round, shooting two under on my back nine to finish in 73 strokes. I knew I had to find a way to shoot under par the following day to play the final round. I got my 2nd round to two under par several times but bad mistakes at my 15th and 16th hole resulted in a bogey and a double bogey and I was out of the tournament and no prizemoney. It was of course a disappointment but also understandable. It had been almost 4 months since I last played real tournament golf and I had to expect some bad mistakes. Now, what can I learn from these mistakes, what do I need to work on the next while?

Foremost, I have to work on relaxing my body when swinging the club. I am much too tense and can’t release the clubhead. I have to trust my swing and let the ball go. Secondly, I will be working on my putting again, just doing some speed work and some competitions on the putting green. Thirdly, keep the good work up on my bunker practice to keep the improvement coming along. I am trying to keep my hands further away from my body and get lower with my shaft angle, so I swing the club shallower, and it works very well. Lastly, keep working on the mental part of the game, believe in my capabilities and trust that I will have a great year.

I am on my way back to Florida, a long trip from Jordan. I have time to do some work now before I travel to Georgia in the middle of May to play a 3 round tournament on the Sunbelt Tour, followed by the Senior US Open qualifying, also in Georgia. Soon after that I will return to Europe to play the next tournament for me on the Staysure Tour, Italian Senior Open.

Until then, have a great golfing year,
